Right now we’ll talk about how to dribble between your legs. Dribbling between your legs is an effective tool when you’re playing basketball because it enables you to change direction while also protecting the ball against the defender.

Like most ball handling drills and techniques, we want to work on staying low. So we want the ball to come no higher than our waist as we handle the ball. And then, when we go between our legs if the ball is in our right hand, we want to step forward with our opposite leg, which would be our left leg. Go between our legs and then we want to protect it with the opposite hand off of the defender.

If we’re going the opposite way, if the ball is in our left hand, we want to go between our legs, stepping forward with our right leg. And then we want to make sure that we always change direction.

Right now I’ll show you a couple of stationery ball handling drills that you can use to work on going between your legs. One will be, I like to work on getting nice and low, and is just something I do for speed. Where now I can work on speed with my dribbling and also going between my legs.

So what I’ll do is I’ll try to go ten times between my legs. I’ll keep my eyes closed. So now I can work on handling the basketball without relying on looking at it. So it’ll look like this.

One, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine, ten. So that’s just something I like to do to just work on going between my legs. And then the other thing that we can work on is a scissor drill. Again, keeping low, balance, speed and accuracy and it’ll look like this.

Again, I’ll stay low and my eyes are closed. One, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine, ten. So now as I do that, I’m working on speed between my legs.

Finally, we’ll have Sammy and Jerry show you how it will look going up and down the court in a game like situation starting from here. And now as they go up and down the court, whenever they go they’ll change direction going between the legs. Here we go.

So Sammy will change direction, get it out, two dribbles. Notice he keeps his head up, nice and low. Two dribbles, he’s going full speed. Here we go, Jerry. Let’s try to go full speed as fast as you can. Here we go. Very good. Change direction. Notice he keeps his head up. Head up, very good. Change direction, he stays low. Very good. Excellent job.

So you notice that as we do this drill we want to, again, stay low, fingertip control. And once we change direction we want to accelerate off of our move.

That’s how you do a between the legs move.
